Strategic Information Systems Planning (SISP) merupakan isu yang sangat penting belakangan ini dalam menghadapi bisnis karena dengan adanya SISP sebuah perusahaan dapat mendayagunakan sistem informasi yang dimilikinya untuk menciptakan sebuah bisnis strategi dan mencapai tujuan bisnisnya. Tetapi keagagalan dalam menjalankan SISP dapat membawa kerugian, kehilangan kesempatan dan resource yang terbuang percuma.

Ada dua pihak yang berperan penting dalam SISP, yaitu :
Computer expert yang akan berhubungan dengan hal-hal teknis seperti hardware, software, database, dan teknologi komunikasi
Business planner yang akan mengenali potensi IT/IS dalam suatu organisasi dan menggunakan/mengekplorasinya menjadi sebuah kelebihan untuk organisasi

Beberapa definisi SISP :
Lederer and Sethi : “The process of deciding the objectives for organizational computing and identifying potential computer applications which the organizational should implement”
T.D. Wilson : “An IS strategy brings together the business aims of the company, an understanding of the information needed to support those aims, and the implementation of computer systems to provide that information. It is a plan for the development of systems towards some future vision of IS in the organization”
Doherty, Marples and Suhaimi : “The process of identifying a portfolio of computer-based applications to be implemented, which is both highly aligned with corporate strategy and has the ability to create an advantage over competitors”

Tujuan dari organisasi untuk mengadopsi SISP adalah :
Dengan adanya SISP maka organisasi dapat menentukan prioritas investasi
Mengambil keuntungan dari kesempatan bisnis
Membangun cost-effective
Membangun kompetensi dan resource yang sesuai dengan organisasi
